TrustCheck Scores Ghanaian Sellers Out of 100. Can That Really Stop a MoMo Scam?
TrustCheck offers moderated reviews, verified business profiles and MoMo-number searches. But its public checker currently shows four published reports. Here's what the score can—and cannot—tell buyers.
The key points of this analysis, checked by the editors.
A high trust score does not guarantee delivery, refunds or fraud protection.
Ghanaian shoppers can check for free; Basic business verification is advertised at GHS 49/month.
Search both the seller's name and payment number, and redact private details in evidence.
You spot a heavily discounted phone on Instagram, message the seller on WhatsApp and receive a Mobile Money number for an upfront payment. The photos look convincing, but you cannot know from a polished profile whether the product will arrive. Ghana-based TrustCheck is trying to fill that gap by letting people search business names, MoMo numbers, social-media handles and websites before paying.
The platform, founded in 2026 by Elliot Brenya according to published company information, offers a business trust score, moderated customer reviews and a list of reported scam identifiers. These are potentially useful signals. They are not the same as a verified delivery history, a bank guarantee or an independent fraud-risk assessment.
What can a shopper actually search?
The official platform lists business profiles and offers a public checker for phone or MoMo numbers, Instagram and TikTok handles and website addresses. The checker marks identifiers as reported, under review or having no published report.
On 1 November 2026, that public page displayed . This is a live website count observed on that date, not a measurement of how many scams occur in Ghana. It also illustrates the limitations of a relatively small community database. A newly created seller account or an unreported number may produce no warning even when the person behind it is dishonest.
four published reports and four identifiers

The 100-point score is a formula, not a fraud probability
TrustCheck's product walkthrough provides a breakdown: up to 30 points for average review rating, 20 for the number of reviews, 20 for business responses, 20 for verification and 10 for having no open disputes.
Consider the example shown on the site. A business with two five-star reviews can receive all 30 rating points but only one of the 20 volume points. With no replies, no verified documents and no open disputes, the displayed score comes to 41 out of 100 despite the perfect star rating.
That transparency is useful, but it is crucial to interpret the result correctly. A score of 41 does not mean that there is a 59% chance the seller will scam you. The number combines platform-selected weights. A legitimate new business may start with a modest score because it lacks reviews, while an older seller may benefit from a stronger response history without guaranteeing future delivery.
What does the Verified seal prove?
According to TrustCheck, a business seeking the Verified label submits documents such as a registration certificate, utility bill or identification, which the platform reviews against the business profile. That process may help establish who operates a page.
It does not mean that TrustCheck has tested every product, insured every transaction or promised to reimburse customers. A verified business can still disappoint buyers, and a business without the seal may simply not have applied. The company also says its staff moderate reviews and that businesses cannot buy the removal of negative feedback. Those are the platform's stated policies, not findings from an external audit.
Free for buyers; paid verification for businesses
TrustCheck advertises free searches, business-profile browsing and reviews for Ghanaian consumers. A business can claim its profile for free, while the Basic verification offer is publicly shown at GHS 49 per month.
This structure raises a fair governance question: if a platform earns revenue from businesses it evaluates, how does it prevent paid verification from being confused with a quality guarantee? Clear moderation rules, published appeal procedures and separation between commercial services and review decisions are more valuable than a vague promise of trust.
Prices and features can change, so potential business subscribers should check the current terms before committing. No platform subscription should be assumed to substitute for proper customer-service or fraud controls.
The biggest mistake: treating no report as a clean record
A seller can change numbers, use an impersonated account or operate under a new handle. Even a well-run reporting database cannot catch every scam immediately, and TrustCheck explicitly warns that no reports is not proof of safety.
Before sending money, compare the seller's business name, payment recipient, social account and website. Look for a genuine invoice, clear return terms and recent evidence that products are actually delivered. If an offer requires urgent payment, refuses written terms or sends you to a different payment name without explanation, investigate further.
After a suspected scam, promptly contact your MoMo provider or bank and ask about available transaction remedies. A public report may help future customers, but it is not a replacement for contacting financial providers or law enforcement.
Privacy deserves the same scrutiny as fraud prevention
TrustCheck's January 2026 privacy policy describes the collection of account details, IP addresses, device and activity data, moderation records and verification documents. It states that some service providers may process data outside Ghana, and describes routes for access, correction and deletion requests.
Those are published privacy commitments, not an independent security certification. Sellers considering document verification should ask who can access submitted IDs, how long information is retained and how disputes are handled. Reviewers should avoid putting private identifiers or sensitive payment information into public posts.
What Cameroon and other markets can learn
The trust problem is not uniquely Ghanaian. In Douala, Buea, Lagos or Abidjan, informal online sales often require buyers to decide whether to send money to someone they have never met. But TrustCheck is currently presented as a Ghana-focused service; its website does not establish comprehensive coverage of Cameroonian merchants.
The transferable idea is an accountable workflow: consistent business identity, moderated transaction-specific reviews, meaningful dispute channels and privacy-conscious reporting. A simple score should supplement, rather than replace, a buyer's due diligence.
Bottom line
TrustCheck offers a practical attempt to make social commerce more transparent. Its score breakdown is publicly explained, and the number-search feature could help buyers pause before a risky payment. Yet the checker’s limited published reports, unverified outcomes and clear distinction between verification and protection are important constraints.
The real measure of success will be whether the platform helps buyers make safer decisions without confusing an attractive score with proof that a transaction is safe.
