XenFi Charges 10% on Uganda Mobile Money Wi-Fi Sales. Is It Still Worth It?
XenFi automates hotspot billing, but Uganda mobile-money sales carry a 10% fee versus 3% for printed vouchers. We calculate the difference and examine operational costs.
The key points of this analysis, checked by the editors.
XenFi's published Uganda fee is 10% for mobile-money sales and 3% for vouchers or agent sales.
The company reports adoption across Africa, but these figures are not independently audited.
Test payments, router outages, privacy and settlement before moving a live hotspot business.
Selling hourly Wi-Fi access sounds simple until the operator has to confirm payments, issue access codes, control session expiry and reconcile every transaction. XenFi, a Ugandan hotspot-management platform, aims to automate those tasks for small network operators.
Its publicly advertised pricing reveals a significant operational trade-off: mobile money transactions in Uganda cost 10%, while printed vouchers and agent-app sales are charged at 3%. For a small business with narrow margins, choosing the payment channel can be almost as important as setting the data price.
What does XenFi automate?
According to the Uganda product page, operators can connect compatible routers, create bundles, issue access vouchers, accept payments and monitor customer sessions through a dashboard.
XenFi lists support for MikroTik, UniFi, Omada and Ruijie, as well as equipment capable of using the RADIUS authentication protocol. It also describes PPPoE subscription features for recurring customers alongside one-off hotspot access.
The platform manages billing and access. It does not automatically supply the operator's upstream internet bandwidth, power, physical equipment or technical maintenance.
A clear calculation: 100 sales at UGX 1,000
The official fee calculator says Uganda mobile money costs 10%, reflecting telecom-related charges, whereas voucher and agent transactions cost 3%.
On a hypothetical UGX 1,000 sale, mobile money fees remove UGX 100, leaving UGX 900 before other business expenses. A printed voucher sale incurs UGX 30 in platform charges, leaving UGX 970.
Across 100 sales, gross revenue is UGX 100,000. XenFi's advertised fees would total UGX 10,000 for mobile money or UGX 3,000 for vouchers — a difference of UGX 7,000.
This is not an estimate of net profit. It excludes bandwidth, router depreciation, electricity, premises, staffing, taxes and possible payment charges imposed separately on customers.
Why operators might still choose mobile money
Mobile money can reduce cash handling, provide a more automated record of transactions and let customers pay without finding a physical agent. Vouchers can be cheaper on the displayed fee schedule but require stock management and may carry other costs or risks.
A useful comparison should therefore include failed payments, customer convenience, reconciliation time, fraud exposure and cash leakage. The lowest percentage may not always produce the best overall result for an individual business.
No monthly licence does not mean no operating costs
XenFi advertises no monthly platform licence, setup fee or fixed per-hotspot charge under the offer presented on its fee page. It says operators pay when they make sales.
That does not remove the costs of maintaining a working Wi-Fi business. The upstream connection, electricity, staff and equipment still need funding. The company also warns that mobile money providers may separately charge the payer, making customer-facing costs different from the platform deduction.
What should a pilot test?
Before launching a large network, test what happens if a payment succeeds but the access code fails, if a router disconnects after purchase or if a customer requests a refund.
The Uganda page describes support for existing vouchers during interruptions and dashboard alerts for offline equipment. Those are product claims, not findings from our own hardware audit.
A practical pilot should measure activation failures, payment reconciliation delays, service uptime and customer-support effort.
Regulation and privacy still matter
A hotspot operator may need to comply with licensing, customer-data and telecom requirements in its country. Integrating router authentication and mobile payments does not itself grant the operator authority to resell connectivity.
If the system collects user details and session logs, the operator should understand data retention, security responsibilities and lawful access controls.
Could this model work in Cameroon?
The operational idea is relevant to student hostels, small hotels and community networks. But the 10% price is a Uganda-specific figure and should not be assumed to apply in Cameroon.
A Cameroonian operator would need to check support for local payment providers, currency pricing, equipment, upstream contracts, customer support and regulatory conditions before building a business plan.
XenFi can simplify hotspot sales, but a useful financial comparison starts with money retained after fees and all the costs required to deliver reliable access.
Satellite internet could help areas left behind by fibre and mobile networks. But licensing, affordability, reliability and national regulation matter more than a flashy speed test.
