> South Africa's Fynbos Money now offers a read-only MCP connection to ChatGPT and Claude. Here's how the permissions, privacy policies and actual investing fees fit together.

## Key takeaways

- Read-only MCP access prevents money movement, not data disclosure or mistaken answers.
- The AI provider's privacy policies apply to information it receives.
- The platform advertises R100/month, or R50 for under-30s, while other investment costs may apply.

Imagine asking an AI assistant which funds you own, how much you pay in fees or what your retirement portfolio could look like in twenty years, without manually copying a statement. Fynbos Money, an investment platform in South Africa, now offers that experience through a Model Context Protocol (MCP) connection to ChatGPT and Claude.

The company says the connection is optional and read-only. An assistant can retrieve authorised investment information but cannot use the integration to move money, buy or sell investments or change allocations. That is a meaningful security boundary. It does not answer a second question, however: what happens to the sensitive financial information an assistant is allowed to read?

## What the MCP connection does

MCP is a way for AI applications to access defined tools and data from external services. According to the official Fynbos AI page, a user adds the company's connector to a compatible assistant, signs into Fynbos and approves the connection.

The assistant can then answer account-specific questions about balances, investments, fees or hypothetical projections. For example, it may estimate how much indirect exposure a user has to a particular company through several funds. Such a calculation can combine portfolio values with fund holdings, but the answer may be approximate if the published fund allocations and current account values have different dates.

An AI-generated projection is also not a guaranteed investment outcome. The assumptions about growth, fees, taxes and future contributions should be stated explicitly and checked before they influence a real financial decision.

## Read-only blocks transactions, not information exposure

A read-only permission model limits an important category of risk: the integration cannot initiate a withdrawal or transaction through its tools. Fynbos also describes the ability to disconnect the assistant through the relevant settings.

But a portfolio includes much more than a balance. Account types, contribution patterns, family savings goals and fund allocations can reveal detailed personal circumstances. Fynbos acknowledges that information viewed through a connected assistant is governed by that provider's own privacy and data policies.

Therefore, users still need to understand the permissions being granted, how the AI service processes their information and how access can be revoked. A compromised assistant account or poor data-handling practices remain concerns even when transfers are disabled.

## What does Fynbos actually cost?

The pricing page lists a Protea subscription of R100 per month, with reduced pricing for certain younger users and an annual option. Fynbos's fee guide also describes a free tier for basic savings products and R1,000 per year for Protea.

The subscription is not the entire cost of investing. Underlying funds carry Total Expense Ratios (TERs), generally reflected within fund returns. The company also explains statutory transaction charges. It says it does not add an assets-under-management platform fee, but that should not be interpreted as every investment transaction being cost-free.

A simple illustration shows why fixed fees matter. R100 monthly means R1,200 per year, equivalent to 12% of a hypothetical R10,000 portfolio or 0.6% of R200,000, before other charges. These comparisons are not investment recommendations; they show how the relative burden of a fixed subscription varies by balance.

## Is the AI feature free?

Fynbos advertises the AI connection itself as free and read-only. That does not mean every Fynbos investment product is available without a subscription, nor that every AI app plan or feature has no cost. Customers should review the pricing and compatibility requirements of both services.

They should also ensure they are using the official MCP address published by Fynbos, mcp.fynbos.money, rather than a connector URL supplied by an unverified third party.

## What to check before connecting

Verify the connector's origin, read the data permissions and inspect the privacy policy of the chosen AI provider. Make sure you know how to revoke authorisation before enabling it. After connecting, compare a simple answer — such as a fund balance or a fee figure — with the record inside the Fynbos application.

For projections, ask the assistant to show its assumptions, dates and calculation method. If the output conflicts with the investment platform, resolve the discrepancy before acting. The assistant can support understanding, but it does not replace the source account record.

We have not performed an independent security audit of the MCP server or connected a live customer portfolio. The permission model discussed here is based on the company's published documentation.

## The wider opportunity for African fintech

A carefully constrained read-only connector could make complex financial products easier to understand without exposing transaction permissions. Yet the true engineering standard is higher than a conversational interface: scopes should be minimal, access revocable, logs understandable and calculations traceable to source data.

Fynbos demonstrates why read-only access matters, but it also shows why privacy and numerical accuracy deserve scrutiny even when an AI cannot touch the money itself.
