> A French master's offer can look affordable until tuition, accommodation, visa costs and the uncertainties of a work-study contract enter the picture. A planning guide for Cameroonian applicants.

## Key takeaways

- Compare the complete cost of living and tuition, not just the advertised registration fee.
- An institution promising work-study support has not guaranteed an employment contract.

A French university brochure shows a bright campus, well-equipped computer labs and graduates working for global companies. For a family in Yaoundé or Douala, the degree can represent a genuine chance at greater mobility. Then come the invoices: registration, a housing deposit, travel, insurance, monthly expenses and possibly several months without income.

A study-abroad decision has to survive a budget spreadsheet, not just a beautiful admissions letter.

## Public university does not always mean cheap tuition

For 2026–2027, Campus France Cameroon lists differentiated public-university registration fees of €2,902 for bachelor's-level study and €3,950 for master's-level study for many students from outside the European Union. Some students qualify for exemptions or other fee regimes, but applicants should not assume the much lower domestic tuition rate automatically applies to them. Campus France Cameroon: study costs.

Regulatory changes in 2026 also affected how universities can award discretionary fee exemptions. Before using an exemption in a financial plan, ask the institution for an individual written confirmation of the tuition you will actually owe and whether the reduction continues in later years. French public-service guidance.

Students may also need to pay the CVEC student-life contribution, listed at €105 for 2026–2027, unless exempt. Private institutions can be substantially more expensive. Campus France notes that private higher-education tuition can exceed €6,000 and reach €18,000 a year or more depending on the institution and programme.

The important comparison is not “public versus private” as a slogan. It is the actual award, its recognition, the confirmed annual cost and the financial conditions tied to your specific nationality and status.

## Living costs can change which offer is affordable

Paris and many of its suburbs can impose very different accommodation and commuting costs from university towns elsewhere in France. That does not make every provincial offer cheap or every Paris-area offer unaffordable. It means the cost of attendance depends on a real housing plan, not an average copied from social media.

Prepare three scenarios. The conservative scenario assumes no paid job and no work-study employer. A middle scenario assumes lower-cost housing becomes available after searching. An optimistic scenario includes a signed work-study agreement, with confirmed remuneration and fee coverage.

The budget should include tuition, deposits, first rent, recurring bills, groceries, transport, mobile connectivity, administrative costs and emergency savings. Separate expenses due before departure from monthly costs after arrival. A family might be able to fund the academic year overall and still struggle when the deposit, flight and registration invoice arrive at once.

For a Cameroonian student, convert the total into CFA francs at an explicit rate and allow for transfer fees. A price expressed in euros can feel abstract until the payment date.

## A work-study promise is not an employment contract

French private schools often advertise alternance, a model combining academic study and work at an employer. Under the right conditions, it can be enormously useful. It is also a common source of misunderstanding.

“Support in finding a company” does not mean a company has agreed to hire you. Eligibility can depend on the type of programme, your residence status, the contract arrangement and the employer's decision. Admission to an academic programme does not automatically produce a work contract.

Before paying a deposit, ask the school what happens if you cannot secure a company by the start of the programme. Are you transferred into a fee-paying non-work-study track? Is the deposit refundable? Who pays the tuition if the contract ends halfway through the year? Can the school document outcomes for international students on the exact programme, rather than showing a campus-wide placement statistic?

These are financial questions, not signs of pessimism.

## The curriculum needs to justify the price

Computer science, cloud engineering, DevOps and cybersecurity are not interchangeable labels. A master's advertised as “cyber” should be examined for actual content: operating systems, networking, application security, risk assessment, cloud architecture, monitoring, incident response and substantial assessed projects.

Ask to speak with graduates. Look at the technical work they completed, the companies that recruited them and the qualifications actually issued. Confirm whether the academic credential is recognised and how the institution describes its legal status.

For students who already have a technical background, another general-purpose diploma might be less valuable than a highly specialised programme with serious laboratory work or industry connections.

## Calculate the return without pretending it is guaranteed

The return on a degree depends on the skills acquired, legal permission to work, language proficiency, professional networks and the cost of financing the move. A large salary shown on a marketing page is not a personal offer of employment.

Compare studying in France against other realistic routes: building experience at home, applying for funded research, strengthening a portfolio and pursuing specialised training elsewhere in Europe. Each route has a different price, uncertainty and likely time to payoff.

## The six documents to request before transferring money

Ask for the complete fee schedule, a written exemption decision where relevant, the award's formal status, work-study contingency rules, deposit and refund conditions, and the institution's exact administrative timetable. Verify promises with the school directly, not only through a recruitment agent.

A good education can transform a career. But buying the prestige of a French address without understanding what you receive is not an investment strategy.
